The Shuswap will play host to world-renowned quilter Catherine Nicholls.
A talented quilter who spends much of her time teaching and showing her art in Britain and Europe, Nicholls’ work will be featured in a “Trunk Show” at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at Sorrento Centre.
The next day, the artist will share her enthusiasm and expertise in “Exploring the Natural World,” a two-day art quilt workshop also at the centre.
Workshop participants will experiment with fabric to re-create and interpret nature’s wide range of textures and colours.
On the first day, quilters will explore the use of ink, paint, crayon, and discharge in a variety of techniques, creating samples and generating ideas. On the second day, students will be guided through the process of developing their own original composition, pattern, and fibre art masterpiece.
Nicholls work is inspired by the natural world around her. Stories legends and the history of people, places and culture provide her with the creative raw material.
Her skills include painting, drawing, surface design, machine- and hand-quilting as well as working with fabric and paper. Nicholls worked for many years in her own interior design business before switching to the vibrant world of textiles.
The artist holds qualifications in patchwork and quilting from City and Guilds and currently tutors City and Guilds’ online courses with DesignMatters. She enjoys teaching textile and mixed media workshops wherever they might be.
Admission to the Trunk Show at Sorrento Centre located art 1159 Passchendaele Rd. is $10 at the door, or included with the tuition cost for those registered for the workshop.
There are a few spaces remaining in the workshop, which costs $470 plus tax and includes instruction, meals from dinner Monday through to Thursday at lunch, and accommodation based on double occupancy.
