Art from across the country and in a variety of mediums will be on display at the Salmon Arm Art Gallery.

The 46th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Society of Canadian Artists opens at the gallery on Hudson Avenue Friday, Sept. 5 with a 7 p.m. reception featuring live music and refreshments.

Officially founded in 1972, the society is a national, non-profit organization created to foster and celebrate the visual arts in Canada.

With more than 300 members, SCA represents art supporters and professional artists who work in a variety of styles and media.

On the occasion of this juried exhibition, the society will introduce and present the first Mary Pratt Crystal Award. The award has been created in recognition of renowned Newfoundland and Labrador artist, Mary Pratt.

Pratt is one of Canada’s most respected artists and has been an active member and ambassador of the Canadian arts community for more than 50 years.

She has served on the Canada Council for the Arts and was named Companion of the Order of Canada in 1996.

Her paintings are featured in many prominent public, corporate, and private collections, including those of the National Gallery, the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Canada House in England.

The award will be presented to an artist for work that is of outstanding quality and that reveals a breadth of emotion, skill of craftsmanship and maturity. The winner will receive a crystal bowl and an additional cash award of a $1,000.

The exhibition runs to Sept. 27, with Coffee Break on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
