Stroll through local history

Walking tour: Brochure brings Salmon Arm to life. A new historical walking tour brochure is available for those who wish to learn more

A new historical walking tour brochure is available for those who wish to learn more about Salmon Arm’s history.

Launched in conjunction with the recent Walk Down Memory Lane event, the brochure is a joint venture between the Salmon Arm branch of the Okanagan Historical Society and the City of Salmon Arm’s Community Heritage Commission.

OHS president Dorothy Rolin encouraged people to plan a leisurely morning, afternoon, or evening stroll and visualize the town’s layout as it was 100 years ago.

She hoped with the help of the numbered brochure the tour would be a great asset for locals and tourists alike.

“An estimated time to do the complete tour is one-and-a-half to two hours, however it can be done just a few locations at a time or all at once,” says Rolin.

A committee of the Salmon Arm branch of the Okanagan Historical Society first began planning the original tour five years ago.

“At that time, we had the expertise from senior OHS members Alf Peterson, Pat Shirley, Don Byers, and Mary Wetherill,” she says. “They, started out with more than 70 historical stops all around Salmon Arm, giving the history of each stop in great detail.”

With some editing, the subsequent committee of Mary Hickman, Rosemary Wilson, Mary Wetherill and Dorothy Rolin pared it down to about 50 stops.

“Two years later with help from Patti Kassa, Mary Landers and Deborah Chapman, members as well as past and present of the city’s heritage committee, the brochure has come to life with only 29 stops,” Rolin says. “A very special mention was given to Patti Kassa who single-handedly worked hours, days and weeks to get this walking tour organized and to the printer on time so it could be launched in conjunction with the very successful “A Walk Down Memory Lane.”

Brochures can be purchased for $2 from the Visitors Centre, and various businesses around town.
