School District 83 is setting students up for success beyond graduation through its Career Development program, which has a number of upcoming events.

These initiatives, planned for February and early March, will “assist students in learning more about various career opportunities” so they can develop the skills necessary to succeed in their field of their choice.

First up is post-secondary tours of UBC-Okanagan and Thompson Rivers University scheduled for Feb. 20, followed by virtual events by the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Eagle River Secondary math teachers will host the high school session on Feb. 21, while Shuswap Middle School’s Grade 8 math department will hold it on Feb. 22 and 23.

From Feb. 28 to March 1, a recruiter from the Centre for Arts and Technology in Kelowna will visit secondary arts classes throughout the district to present career options in the digital arts field from Feb. 28 to March 1.

The following week, the Council of Forest Industries and Adams Lake Sawmill will host students from J.L. Jackson, Salmon Arm and Eagle River secondary schools for a facility and yard tour and will be outlining the different red seal, technology and academic career options in the forest industry.

On March 7, the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists will host a provincewide virtual seminar highlighting career options in health-care technology.

The final event will take place on March 8 when Go2Hr will have an all day field trip at the Prestige Harbourfront Resort for Grade 10-12 students who are interested in tourism and hospitality careers.

Parents and students can find out more about these opportunities and registration through their school’s career coordinator or district coordinator George Richard at grichard@sd83.bc.ca or 778-824-1188. Additionally, anyone interested in sharing information about their career high school students can contact him to arrange that as well.
