City of Salmon Arm staff may be involved in some DIY renovation work around city hall.

At its April 22 meeting, council approved a pair of purchases for upgrades on the municipality’s side of the building at 2nd Avenue NE. One involved $30,000 for the purchase of office equipment.

“Additional working spaces are required within city hall to accommodate our growing team,” commented city engineer Jennifer Wilson in a report to council. “For the purpose of consistency in the office furniture-type throughout the building, staff solicited a quote for an additional five working spaces as well as the replacement of four existing work spaces that’s required to make room for the other additional work stations.”

The Office Furniture Upgrade project was awarded to Total Office Supply Ltd. of Salmon Arm for $20,743 plus taxes.

The second project involves replacing the existing original carpet in the 19-year-old facility.

“The carpet has reached end of its useful life and we’re starting to have a lot of fraying and trip hazards resulting,” said Wilson. “As such, we have been replacing portions of the carpet throughout he building the last few years, the worst first, using vinyl planking, and for the purposes of consistency we are looking to replace the rest of the carpet in the building using the same vinyl planking.”

While it’s unlikely all the remaining carpet will be replaced this year, Wilson explained a significant discount was available by doing a bulk order and, as such, staff recommend purchasing all of the needed flooring at this time for a quoted amount of $49,951.71.

A written report to council explains the flooring installation will be done on a piece-meal basis as staff can be relocated temporarily to other areas.

“Public Works staff may do portions of the flooring installation based on availability, and will also be required to relocate office furniture to and from the working areas,” reads the report. “Due to the logistical complications, staff are recommending award of the flooring installation to NuFloors on an area by area basis in an amount not to exceed the quote for full replacement of $61,835.22.”

Asked about council chambers, Wilson indicated the flooring there is not being replaced.
