Salmon Arm Secondary is seeking nominations of past graduates who have fulfilled the oft-used Dr. Seuss quote “Oh, the places you’ll go!” for the school’s Wall of Fame.

Started in 2000, there have been no additions to the wall since 2014, but vice principal Rhys Waters is looking to resurrect the tribute to former students who have gone on to do great things.

“We’re proud of our grads,” he said of pursuing this. “We want to celebrate their various successes.”

Those successes are varied indeed, with the wall celebrating former students who have gone on to achieve excellence in a wide range of fields, including – but not limited to – academics, athletics, arts, business, humanitarian services, environmentalism, science, politics and more.

The 21 alumni currently recognized on the wall include such local celebrities as former MLA George Abbott, ski champion Reino Keski-Salmi, educator and Neskonlith elder Dr. Mary Thomas, jazz musician Richard Underhill and naval officer Vice Admiral A.L. Collier, among others.

Waters and principal Rob Cadden are now looking to add another three to four individuals this year and start recognizing other high achievers.

“It’s so the community can be reminded how much talent comes out of this town,” Cadden said of the initiative and inviting the public to submit nominations.

To be eligible for the Wall of Fame, an individual must have graduated from SAS at least 10 years ago and have demonstrated excellence as deemed fit by the selection panel, which includes staff and one community member. Nominations can be made by filling the form out online at www.sas.sd83.bc.ca or in person at the school. Additional information can be found on the Wall of Fame tab on the SAS website, with Waters working to digitize the plaques and put them online there as well.
