A new chief and council have been elected to represent the Splatsin community.
Michael Christian has been elected as Kukpi7 (chief) following Monday’s election.
Vikki Tronson, Phyllis Jezewsky, Crystal Morris, Miranda Kimbasket and Edna Felix have been elected as councillors.
Swearing-in of the newly elected will take place this evening at 5 p.m. at the Splatsin Community Centre.
The newly elected council will assume power immediately thereafter.
Christian ran on a platform of bringing unity, prosperity, experienced leadership and transparency to the Splatsin community and this messaging resonated with members.
“In a remarkable display of collective vision and commitment to a brighter future, the Splatsin community has spoken, and today, I am humbled and honoured to announce that they have entrusted me with the responsibility of serving as their Kukpi7,” said Christian.
“Transparency and honesty will be the bedrock of our administration, fostering an environment where communication flows freely, and trust is paramount.
“I am deeply thankful for the support of the Splatsin community, and I am committed to working tirelessly on their behalf. Let us move forward together, united in purpose, towards a brighter tomorrow.”
Christian served as Splatsin Kukpi7 previously from 1999 to 2001 and possesses many years of successfully delivering important initiatives for Splatsin and the Secwepemc Nation.
“Congratulations to the newly elected chief and council and thank you to everyone who ran in this election,” Splatsin administration said in Tuesday’s results.
Christian received 89 votes while both Nerissa Joseph and George William received 76.
For councillor, Tronson garnered the most votes with 110, followed by 101 for both Morris and Jezewsky, 97 for Kimbasket and 94 for Felix.
Other candidates who put their names forward were: Stephanie Harry (85), Gloria Morgan (82), Yvonne Felix (75), Trina Antoine (75), Crystal Johnson (74), Lawrence Lee (72), Sherman Nicholas (67), Anthony Antoine (61) and Bryce Jones (46).
