Salmon Arm female Silverhawks take gold, silver at tournament

Largest tournament SAMHA’s ever hosted saw over 330 skaters

A couple of Salmon Arm Silverhawks teams medalled over the family day weekend, Feb. 17-19, when the organization hosted its largest female hockey tournament.

Over 330 young athletes representing 22 different teams participated in the Shuswap Female Winter Tournament, with the U13 Silverhawks taking gold, and the U15 team finishing with silver. The U11 and U18 teams also battled it out over the weekend, doing well in their divisions.

Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association (SAMHA) parent volunteers planned and prepared the major tournament, which went well beyond the ice, and pulled off a very successful weekend.

“SAMHA hasn’t hosted a tournament of this size ever in the city,” Val Kloska, vice president of female hockey, said in a media release. “And so to do it in the female hockey context was a special opportunity to highlight the growth of female hockey.”

In addition to the on-ice action, players were able to participate in sessions of yoga, rock climbing, dance and karaoke, made possible by a grant from the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society. There was also session with guest speakers Gracie Graham and Chloe Primerano of Hockey Canada’s U18 women’s national team.
