A Salmon Arm woman had to be airlifted to hospital following a side-swipe collision with a semi-trailer on Friday, Feb. 19.

At approximately 3 p.m., Salmon Arm RCMP and rescue crews responded to a two-vehicle collision in the 4400 block of the Trans-Canada Highway in Canoe, near the Cal-Van Motel.

The collision involved a commercial vehicle and a passenger car.

Police indicate the car, which was headed east, suffered major damage as it collided with the side of the trailer and hit the trailer wheels off the westbound semi-truck.

The driver of the eastbound car was transported to hospital with significant upper-body injuries. Police have no update on her injuries at this time.

A young child was riding in a car seat at the time of the crash and was not hurt.

The highway was closed off for a period of time to allow a medivac helicopter to land near the scene. The highway was also closed to allow for the RCMP’s examination of the scene.

The driver and passenger of the westbound tractor-trailer unit were not injured.
