BC ELECTION 2017: BC Liberal candidate responds

What would you do to immediately improve the situation of affordable housing in our region?

What would you do to immediately improve the situation of affordable housing in our region?

Affordable housing is more than a roof over our heads, it’s the opportunity to buy a home, put down roots, and start building equity.

The key to improving affordability over the long term is creating new supply. The BC Liberal government committed an additional $855 million over the last year to ensure more British Columbians have access to some 5,300 units of new, affordable housing.

Last year in Salmon Arm, our government invested $2.9 million to help 461 people with their housing costs. And I recently had the honour of announcing almost $9 million to partner with the City of Enderby to expand 48 units of housing for seniors. And we created the BC Home Partnership Program, helping eligible first time homebuyers purchase their first home by matching their downpayment, up to five per cent of the purchase price, to a maximum of $37,500. This 25-year loan is interest and payment free for the first five years. To date, 11 applications have been approved in our region. If re-elected, I will continue to work for my constituents, ensuring housing remains affordable and that those who need the provincial government’s help the most, get it.
