These are pertinent questions as the Village of Chase begins to seek public input on the development of a water conservation strategy.
Clean water is an integral part of a healthy community.
Having clean water pumped to your house and flow out of your faucets is an important service that is easy to take for granted.
However, there is a complex web of infrastructure, maintenance and treatment activities that must take place for water to get from its natural source into your house.
Today, many communities, including Chase, are facing considerable pressure to ensure that the water going through treatment and distribution systems is used responsibly.
There is increasing concern about the environmental impact of wasting water resources and an increasing public desire to see municipal water provided in a cost effective and efficient manner.
For these reasons, the Village of Chase has undertaken a water conservation strategy to examine how much water is being used, review key trends that factor into water use in Chase and to identify strategies to reduce overall water consumption in the community.
The village is currently working with a consultant to help develop this water conservation strategy.
The preliminary findings from the water conservation strategy show that daily water consumption in the Village of Chase is 693 litres per person per day (2013 data).
This number is significantly higher than the Canadian average daily per capita water consumption of 510 litres (2009 data).
Members of the water conservation strategy team will be attending the Friday Farmer’s Market on July 11 and July 25 to share initial findings from the review of water consumption patterns and to gather input from Chase residents on what water conservation strategies could be used to reduce water use.
