An Okanagan man will spend 45 days in jail and have to pay more than $1,400 after being caught being at the wheel while prohibited from driving on two separate occasions.

Keith P. C Booy appeared in Penticton Provincial Court on April 11 to be sentenced for two Motor Vehicle Act cases.

The latest sentence is not the first to send him to jail, as Crown informed the courts that he had previously served 15 days for a driving offence in February of 2023 only to continue to break the law.

In October of 2023, he was caught behind the wheel of a vehicle with expired registration and insurance leaving a liquor store in Oliver.

In July of 2023, he was pulled over after an officer checked his plate in Salmon Arm just after midnight and found that he was prohibited from driving.

In addition to the jail time, Crown asked for fines to be paid, as well as a two-year driving prohibition.

“I’m not unsympathetic to the fact that it can be very difficult to live in these communities without driving because they are so spread apart and there basically isn’t any public transportation between the communities,” the judge noted.

Booy’s driving history and continued breaching of driving prohibitions were noted as aggravating factors by the judge.
