Civilians attend to a pedestrian struck near the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Shuswap Street at around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

A pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being struck by a car on the Trans-Canada Highway Thursday morning.

Sgt. Carlos Tettolowski of the Salmon Arm RCMP reports the pedestrian was struck after the driver was trying to turn left, but did not see the person in the street.

"At this point we know they are serious injuries, but we do not believe they are life-threatening."

While awaiting an ambulance, citizens, including workers from a nearby construction site, attended to the injured person, who was struck in the eastbound lane of the highway in front of the Barley Station Brew Pub near the Shuswap Street intersection. The incident occurred about 11:30 a.m.

The collision slowed traffic on the highway down for approximately half an hour as they waited for an ambulance and to clear the scene.

Tettolowski says the police investigation is still in the early stages, but does not rule out the possibility of charges being laid against the driver.
