A few drivers were distracted from their cell phones Monday when they were pulled over by the police.
On April 3, Salmon Arm RCMP partnered with the RCMP Provincial Highway Patrol Unit in a traffic blitz at the Shuswap Street/Highway 1 intersection.
Salmon Arm Sgt. Scott West said officers focused their efforts on intersection infractions and distracted drivers. He said approximately one-third of the nine violation tickets issued during the two-hour blitz were for distracted-driving offences, while the balance were for yellow-light traffic violations.
“Of the drivers served violation tickets, one was operating a commercial vehicle,” said West.
West says Salmon Arm RCMP and their partners in the Southeast District Highway Patrol will continue conducting random patrols at various intersections in Salmon Arm, and reminds motorists that the use of hand-held electronic devices while driving is strictly prohibited.
The legislated penalty for using a hand-held electronic device in BC. is $367, and includes driving demerit points.
