Recycling numbers see upswing

Salmon Arm residents continue to buy in to the city’s curbside garbage and recyclable collection program.

Figures for April show the city diverted 46,705 kilograms of recyclable waste from the landfill.

This is 1,640 more than in March, and 12,535 more than January when the program began.

As for the amount of waste still going into the landfill, while the figure for April, 123,605, is 4,470 kilograms less than March, it’s still about 20,000 kilograms higher than the collection figures for January and February.

Regarding the increase, municipal engineer Rob Niewenhuizen noted that March had an additional week, meaning more pickup dates. The city is also seeing more people utilize the program than when it began.

“It’s taken some time for people to actually do the buy in and get organized to recycle,” said Niewenhuizen. “We’ve had some comments from our contractor indicating that he’s seeing more recycling bags going out into the street than normal. I think it will probably level out at some point.”
