Salmon Arm takes aim at insects

The City of Salmon Arm will be receiving provincial grant money to help control the spread of West Nile Virus.

The City of Salmon Arm will be receiving provincial grant money to help control the spread of West Nile Virus.

Last week council learned the city will be receiving a grant totalling $26,439 through the B.C. Government’s West Nile Risk Reduction Initiative.

Engineering and public works director Dale McTaggart said the funds would go towards a larvaciding program, expected to begin soon.

“We have a large list of areas where mosquitoes breed, catch basins, areas with standing water year round,” said McTaggart.

A contractor will treat these with VectoBac, a larvacide that is environmentally safe and targets only mosquito, black fly, midge and filter fly larvae. It has no effect on aquatic life.
