Watch out for wind gusts on Shuswap lakes

Environment Canada cautions boaters to be alert to winds gusting up to 50 km/h in some areas.

Environment Canada has issued the following "Special Weather Statement" for the Shuswap, warning of gusty winds in lakes this afternoon and evening.

A summertime cold front will sweep across the Southern Interior tonight. A sudden shift and increase in the winds will occur ahead of the front this afternoon or evening. Gusty winds will persist overnight.

Given the recent benign weather and the sunny outlook, the increase in winds may come as a surprise to boaters and campers on or near the many lakes of the Southern Interior.

A wind warning will not be issued but gusts over the water may approach 50 km/h in some areas.

Everyone enjoying the outdoors should diligently monitor the local wind conditions, which will vary dramatically in strength and direction from lake to lake.

By Saturday morning the front will have exited the province. In the cooler air behind the front, Saturday's maximum temperatures will fall by a very noticeable five to ten degrees from recent days.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
