Dorothy passed peacefully in her home at Hillside Village in Salmon Arm just a few weeks short of her 87th birthday.
Dorothy was born on a farm near Leask, Saskatchewan. When her brothers enlisted in the army in 1939, Dorothy's mother moved the girls to a farm in North Battleford and eventually to Haney, BC.
Dorothy married David Gooden in 1955 and they moved to Salmon Arm shortly afterwards.
Dorothy is survived by sons Les (Tatiana), Bryan (Juliet), Kevin (Deanna) and daughter Elizabeth (Doug) Grandchildren:, Ekaterina, William, Yulia-Joy; Jackline, Ketty, Grace; Stephanie, Adam, Travis; Marsha, Dylan, Jacob, and great granddaughters Alexandra and Natasha.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents William and Ethel Smith, brothers Jim, Jack, Leslie and sisters Margaret, Mary and Mildred.
Over the years Mom enjoyed working at the local pharmacy, working in the concession at Okanagan College shortly after it opened in Salmon Arm and doing volunteer work. She always wanted to help others and was happy to be an advocate for others. For many years Mom was involved with the First United Church where she had been a member over 60 years. Just to mention a few of her interests over the years Mom took great joy in attending performances at Shuswap Theatre, reading, painting and especially writing, whether it be poetry or her memoirs. Before moving to Hillside Mom lived at Pioneer Lodge where she worked in the store and could enjoy being around others. After moving to Hillside Mom spent many years taking part in as many activities as she could. Being the first official resident Mom jumped on the chance to be on the Executive of Hillside Village's Resident's Council where she could again advocate for others.
We are grateful to Dr. Guy DeWet for the genuine care he showed Mom over the many years he was her family Doctor. And a big thank you to all the staff at Hillside Village who made her feel like she was at home.
