November 10, 1931 - November 16, 2018
It is with great sorrow but with an even greater hope, we share that our beautiful mom, Sonya Rose Mudge, left her earthly home on November 16, 2018 at the age of 87. We invite you to join us on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 1pm to celebrate her life: Bower's Funeral Home, Salmon Arm. Reception to follow at Sunridge Estates (3201 6th Ave NE).
Sonya was born in Sexsmith, Alberta on November 10, 1931: a Canadian-born daughter of Ukrainian Immigrants (Jakim and Ludmilla Krestinski). As a young girl her family settled in Armstrong, BC and later in Vernon, BC.She told many stories of the shenanigans that went on at the family farm with her 5 brothers and 5 sisters (Stan, Walter, Evange, Anna, Joanna, Elizabeth, Lillian, Bill, Dan, Jake).
After High School, Sonya worked as a Nurses' Aid, and then moved to Three Hills Alberta to attend Bible School. She lived in Prince George for a time (working with CSSM and also as a medical receptionist) but later returned to Three Hills where she met and married Ken. Their 4 children were all born in Vernon BC: Phil (Arlene) Mudge, Beth (Richard) Callahan, Janelle (Dave) Danyluk, and David Mudge. In 1970 the Mudge family moved to a lakeside property in Blind Bay - a place Sonya thoroughly enjoyed calling home.
Mom was loving, capable, fun, and thrifty. She excelled at baking, cooking, and gardening. It was common-place to come home from school to the smells of freshly baked bread or sweet treats. Sonya's sister's affectionately nick-named her "Madame Bonoit" because of her exceptional culinary skills, which sometime even included a 1st Place ribbon at the Fall Fair. Mom fully immersed herself into the role of Mother and Homemaker. She was our cheerleader and our taxi driver. She attended all our concerts and sports activities, proof-read our school assignments, and continued to pack our school lunches long after we were old enough to do so ourselves! When we moved away from home, she often sent us care packages - packed full with Okanagan fruit, fresh baking, a stick of deodorant, and the lingering smell of home. Mom touched the lives of everyone she met. Many of our friends referred to her as "Mama Mudge".
Mom was the absolute best Grammie to Whitney, Wyatt, Keifer, Hannah, Michael, and Jaidyn. She adored them. Sleep-overs at Grammie's were a common occurrence. So was baking cinnamon buns, making play dough, building fires at the beach, and sometimes even jumping on the bed together.
As a "Preacher's Kid", growing up in the Ukrainian Baptist Church, Sonya grew up learning about Jesus. As a teenager, she made a decision to personally embrace Faith in Jesus, and devoted the rest of her life to following Him. Heaven is now her forever home, and she is far more alive today than she ever was here on earth.
