Apparently our MP, Colin Mayes, has not only lost touch with his constituents but also with reality.
Mr. Mayes suggested that no one needs to have free access to computer Internet service such as provided at the library and SASCU Downtown Activity Centre.
He was attempting to justify the withdrawal of funding by the Harper government that supports those services by telling the Observer: “Life is about priorities and you have to set those priorities and decide what’s important to you. People always find the resources to find what’s high on their priorities, whether they’re poor or not. Those are the decisions you have to make in life, whether you’re poor or not.”
Obviously Mr. Mayes needs reminding that many people are barely able to meet the first priorities of food and shelter. Internet service costs approximately $30 per month and that is after a purchase of a computer.
I would like to suggest that Mr. Mayes sit down at his lap top (provided by the taxpayer) and send a memo to all Conservative MPs and pass on his “Life is about priorities” theory. Be sure to send the message to all those MPs who ride limos to Parliament Hill. Send it along to anyone who may be planning to be picked up by the taxpayers’ helicopter after a fishing trip. Also remind them all that the most expensive hotel rooms and orange juice at $16 a glass should not be considered a priority.
