Swimmers claim three firsts

The Shuswap Swimming Team put in great performances at the Kokanee Spring Invitational swim meet in Vernon last weekend, the final Short Course swim meet of the season (racing in 25-metre pools).

The team came home with three first-place finishes, 17 team records broken, one more swimmer qualified to race at the next Swim BC “AA” Provincial Championships, and one swimmer took home a cash prize.

•10-and-under girls – Lilli Rakose-Lund earned sixth place in three races: the 50-m and 200-m backstroke and 50-m butterfly races, and broke a couple team records as well.

•11-12 girls – Paige Coutlee took fourth place in the 50-m butterfly race, and broke one team record. Emma Pyle was fifth place in the girls 50-m breaststroke. Hannah Kalinczuk was 11th in the 100-m backstroke and set a new team record in the 200-m butterfly. Morgan Rasmuson was 13th in both the 50-m and 200-m backstroke, and Cabri Wilson was 16th in the 50-m breaststroke. The 4 x 50m medley relay team of Kalinczuk, Rasmuson, Coutlee and Wilson was fifth place in a great race, and broke a team record in the process.

• 13-14 Girls – Bree Cooper took first and second place in the 50-m and 100-m butterfly races respectively, and broke three team records along the way. Cooper’s time in the 100-m butterfly final earned her second place and a cash prize too. Skyla Eberle was fourth in the 50-m freestyle and broke a team record in the 200-m backstroke, Jessie Baird was seventh in the 100-m breaststroke, and Chiara Kuzmick took eighth in the 50-m breaststroke.

The 4 x 50m Medley Relay team of Kuzmick, Pyle, Cooper and Eberle had a fast race, picking up third place.

•15-and-older Girls – Chelsea Stadnyk was one of only three team swimmers who won first place, doing so in the 17-and-older girls 50-m freestyle and third in the 100-m backstroke races.

• 11-12 boys – Ethan Quilty earned 1st place in the 50-m breaststroke race, and broke a pair of team records in the meet.  Torrey McKee placed fourth in the 50-m backstroke, Olin Mosher was sixth in the 50-m breaststroke, and Ty Webster Locke placed ninth in the 100-m backstroke.

•13-14 boys – Logan Pilias picked up third place in the 50-m freestyle race and broke three team records, while Thomas Flahr was right behind him in the same race picking up fourth, and qualifying for the Swim BC “AA” Provincial Championships to be held in June 2011, and broke two team records as well. The 4 x 50m medley relay team of Pilias, Quilty, Flahr and Mosher had a fast race, placing eighth place in the meet, and broke the team record too.
