Salmon Arm community shelter meeting demand amid cold snap

With overnight temperatures dropping below -20 C, additional beds have been made available at Salmon Arm’s recently opened community shelter.

Four additional beds were added at the Marshlands Shelter, which opened its doors at 341 and 361 Fraser Ave. on Dec. 12, 2023. This brings the total number of beds to 29, the maximum number allowed at the BC Housing facility according to occupancy guidelines.

“We have to follow occupancy guidelines for how many people we can have in the space, including our staff, said Glenda Cooper, manager of supporting homefulness with Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Shuswap Revelstoke.

CMHA oversees operations at the shelter, which is open year-round, 24/7, and provides daily meals and support services.

As of Thursday, Jan. 11, Cooper said demand had not yet exceeded capacity at the facility.

“So far we have had room for folks,” said Cooper, adding CMHA is also reaching out to those living rough and not using the shelter.

“We also have an outreach team that is always out trying to connect with folks and making sure they have a plan to be warm,” said Cooper.

While a formal warming centre has not been opened, the City of Salmon Arm was encouraging people to consider the Shaw Centre as a safe, warm alternative to being outdoors.

“Whether you’re looking to escape the cold, catch a game or break a sweat on the walking track, our arena is here for you.,” said the city in a post on its Facebook page. The Shaw Centre is open Friday through Sunday.
