Shuswap anglers can really get their hooks into Brewed in Canada’s upcoming fundraiser, the 4th Annual Fishing Derby in support of BC Children’s Hospital.

The derby started as an offshoot of the Bats for a Cause in 2021 after COVID social distancing cancelled the ball tournament and prompted organizers to think outside the diamond. In the three years since, the fishy fundraiser has brought in over $81,000 for BC Children’s, with organizers casting for a milestone goal this year.

“We’re hoping to hit the $100,000 mark this year,” Mandy Davis, one of the founding members, said of their goal. “We are appreciative of each and every person who supports us.”

This year that includes Canooligans, which has collaborated with Brewed in Canada to introduce Dine and Donate.

From now until May 31, when people dine in, 10 per cent of the bill before tax will be donated to BC Children’s Hospital when patrons write “Brewed in Canada” on their receipt.

The derby itself takes place Saturday, May 11, on Shuswap Lake as participants can head to their favourite fishing hole and have from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to hopefully land a lunker.

“Derby check in is done the day before at various locations, where anglers will receive their 2024 measuring board,” Davis explained, adding that people can start anywhere on the Shuswap the day of the derby.

Registration for the event is $100 per boat, with $25 of that fee going towards the first place prize. There are also prizes for second and third places, valued at $1,000 and $500 respectively.

Following the event, Brewed in Canada will host a Derby Day in the Bay after party at Finz Bar& Grill in Blind Bay from 5 to 9 p.m. with live music by Gary Ess.

There will also be a silent auction, the chance to win a vacation to the Rustic Resort at Thuya Lakes, and a weekend getaway at the Blind Bay Hideaway.

Registration and information on their fundraising efforts is available online at www.teambrewedincanada.ca.
