Small upswing in city construction

Figures show that 2010 was a better year for the City of Salmon Arm as far as commercial and residential construction goes.

Figures show that 2010 was a better year for the City of Salmon Arm as far as commercial and residential construction goes.

At last Monday’s meeting, city council received the December building department report – a culmination of building permits issued, and their related values, from throughout the year.

The report shows that, overall, the city took in $27,249,702 in 2010, about a $3 million increase over 2009. Items up in 2010 included single family development ( $11,459,825 – up by $2 million), commercial (1,062,400 – up $200,000) and additions to industrial ($985,820 - up $938,000).

Development and planning manager Corey Paiement attributed the figure for commercial to the Askew’s Uptown development.

The increase is mostly in residential,” commented Coun. Kevin Flynn. “Obviously, it’s not anywhere near where it was in previous years but it is moving up. Hopefully that trend of increasing continues into 2011.”
