Salmon Arm tennis teams among champs at Interior Playoffs

July 8-9 event hosted by Salmon Arm Tennis Club

The Salmon Arm Tennis Club has announced the winners of the 2023 Tennis BC Team Tennis Interior Playoffs which took place July 8-9 in Salmon Arm.

In the 4.0-4.5 Women’s Event, Team Salmon Arm’s Ace Kickers (Wallis Thompson, Mary Potter, Marietjie Bonthuys, Rénée Riopelle, Aaliyah Martin-Patterson, Shannon Hecker and DeeDee Shattock) squeaked out a win over second-place Team Kamloops’ Get a Grip. The final match of the tournament determined the winner of the women’s event in an exciting second set tie-breaker.

In doubly good news for Salmon Arm, the 3.5-4.0 Men’s team No Strings Attached from Salmon Arm won the 3.5-4.0 Men’s event (Gord Roberts, Tim Mosher, Bill Spencer, Kenton Martin and Robin Wiens). No Strings Attached was the only team of the weekend who experienced a clean sweep by defeating both teams in their tournament bracket with a 100 per cent win record.

In the 4.0-4.5 Men’s event, Team Kelowna’s Sultan’s of Swingweight (Jason Tsai, Spencer McIntosh, Ken Cheung, Ben Thompson and Ben Lim) defeated Team Vernon to win the championship with a 4-2 final match tally.

Other teams which competed at the event were the Hawks, Racquettes and Racquetteers, all from Predator Ridge, as well as the Smart Aces and Mixed Nuts from Kelowna.

All champions received a Tennis BC medal as well as an invitation to the provincial championships which will take place Aug. 18-20 at the Lower Mainland.

Tournament director and Salmon Arm Tennis Club vice-president Marianne VanBuskirk is grateful to all event donors and sponsors.

The club also thanked the Predator Ridge Men’s Team (The Hawks) for donating $70 in Askew’s Gift Cards back to the club.

Much appreciation also goes out to the wonderful volunteers who put in many hours/days/weeks to prepare the courts and the grounds for the event, to purchase and prepare food and beverages for the athletes, and to assist with clean-up and take-down in the blistering heat during the weekend.
